MacArthur was brought up in Los Angeles and completed his primary education there. He attended Bob Jones University but received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Los Angeles Pacific College in 1961.

MacArthur received a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from Talbot Theological Seminary in 1963. He also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Talbot Theological Seminary in 1977.
