Early Life

James Harden is also known as James Edward Harden Jr. He was born on August 26, 1989, in Compton, Los Angeles, California. He was raised in Compton by his mother Monja Willis as his father was absent from his childhood.

Harden started playing basketball at a young age and due to his skill, he soon became one of the best players in his age group.

While attending Artesia High School, he led his team to two state championship titles and was named a McDonald’s All-American and Parade All-American.

After high school, Harden played college basketball for the Arizona State University Sun Devils where he was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the third overall pick in the NBA Draft. He was named a unanimous All-American and Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2009.

Career

Oklahoma City Thunder (2009–2012)

James Harden began his professional basketball career with the NBA in 2009 where he was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the third overall pick.

Harden played his first season for the City Thunder at the age of 20, recording the fourth-highest 3-point percentage (.375) in NBA history. He became the player to record the most consecutive 3-point field goals since Houston guard Michael Dickerson.

He scored more than 10 points on 54 occasions in his second season and averaged 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 62 games. For his good performance, he was named NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

Harden played his third season in 2013 against the Phoenix Suns, scoring 40 points and leading the team to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Miami Heat in five games.

In this match, Harden became the first NBA player in a reserve role since Dallas guard Rodrigue Beaubois to score 40 points.

Houston Rockets (October 2012–2020)

After James Harden failed to agree to a contract signing with the Thunder, he was traded to the Houston Rockets on October 27, 2012, and signed a five-year, $80 million contract on October 31, 2012.
