Early Life
Liz Cheney is also known as Elizabeth Lynn Cheney. She was born on July 28, 1966 in Madison, Wisconsin into a political family.
Her father is Dick Cheney, who served as the 46th Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush, and his mother is former Second Lady Lynn Cheney. She has a younger sister, Mary Cheney. At the time of Liz’s birth, her parents were studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UOWM).
Liz was brought up in Wyoming and received her primary education from there. After his father was elected to Congress in 1970, his family moved to Casper and Washington, DC.
In 1984, Cheney graduated from McLean High School in Washington, DC. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College in 1988 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1996. While there, she also studied Middle Eastern history at the Oriental Institute.
Career
Liz Cheney started her career working with the State Department and the US Agency for International Development. She also worked at Armitage Associates LLP, a consulting firm founded by former Defense Department official and Iran-contra operative Richard Armitage.
Following law school, Cheney was appointed Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State for Assistance to the Former Soviet Union in 2002, but left that position in 2003 to serve on her father’s vice presidential campaign.
In February 2005, she was appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and Coordinator for the Comprehensive Middle East and North Africa Initiative at the State Department. She also led the Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group (ISOG), a unit within the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.
In 2007, Cheney served as co-chair for Fred Thompson’s 2008 presidential campaign, and then that same year, she served as senior foreign policy advisor for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign.
After leaving his post as foreign policy advisor, in 2009 she co-founded Keep America Safe, an organization that was vocal in its opposition to the President’s national security policies.
In 2012, Cheney and her family moved to Wyoming. In Wyoming, Cheney founded the non-profit organization Alliance for a Strong America. She was a contributor for Fox News from January 2012 to July 2013.
Cheney also ran for Senate from Wyoming in 2014 but lost.
US House of Representatives (2016–2020)
Liz Cheney was elected to the US House of Representatives for the first time in 2016. She served in the US House of Representatives for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. In this election, she defeated Democratic candidate Charlie Hardy by a margin of 67% to 33% votes.
Liz Cheney was elected the first female chairperson of the House Republican Conference in 2019. She is a conservative Republican, but she has also been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump.
She was one of only ten Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in 2019. She has also been a strong critic of Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Liz Cheney lost the May 2022 Wyoming Republican primary election to Harriet Hageman, an attorney endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Cheney received 28.9% of the vote while Heisman received 66.3%. It was a landslide victory for the Heisman and marked the end of Cheney’s political career in Wyoming.
