Navalny was a famous leader of the Russia of the Future Party. He was considered one of the most vocal critics of President Vladimir Putin.

He was born on 4 June 1976 in Butyn, near Moscow, to Anatoly Navalny and Lyudmila Navalny. His parents owned a basket-weaving factory which they had been running since 1994 in the village of Kobyakov, Vologda Oblast.

Navalny graduated from Kalininets secondary school in 1993. He then obtained a bachelor’s degree in law from the People’s Friendship University of Russia in 1998.

Then he obtained an economics degree from the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation in 2001. She also received a scholarship to the Yale World Fellowship program at Yale University in 2010.

Navalny started his career as a lawyer in 1998. He worked as a lawyer for various Russian companies. He was a registered lawyer and a member of the Advocates Chamber (Bar Association) of Kirov Oblast.

In 2010, due to his move to Moscow, he ceased to be a member of the Advocates Chamber of Kirov Oblast and became a member of the Advocates Chamber of Moscow.

In November 2013, after the verdict in the Kirovles case came into force, Navalny was deprived of the status of a lawyer.

In 2000, Navalny joined the liberal opposition Russian United Democratic Party (Yabloko). He worked on various posts in the party till 2007.

In 2012, Navalny was elected to the Coordination Committee of the Russian opposition, and in 2013, he first ran for mayor of Moscow against incumbent mayor Sergei Sobyanin, but did not win. With his strong performance he stood second in this election.

In 2017, he played a leading role in organising mass protests against the Putin government over election fraud.

On December 13, 2016, Navalny announced that he would run for President of Russia but was barred from running by the Central Election Commission (CEC) due to a criminal conviction. Despite all this, he continued to campaign for change in Russia and called on his supporters to vote for other candidates who opposed the government.

Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF): Also known as the Fond Borbi s Korupsi (FBK) in Russian.

Navalny founded an organisation called Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) in 2011 to expose and fight corruption among top Russian officials. During this time, he participated and led large-scale protests against President Putin’s alleged election rigging and corruption.

Through this organisation he exposed many corruptions and became famous throughout Russia. But on 9 October 2019, the organisation was declared a “foreign agent” by the Ministry of Justice due to lack of evidence in connection with the protests against the government. His methods have also been criticised.

In June 2021, ACF was designated as an extremist organisation and abolished by the Moscow City Court. Some argue that it has been an important force for change in Russia, while others argue that it has been a divisive and disruptive force.

According to a 2020 survey by the “Levada Center,” a Russian independent polling organisation, 21% of Russians had a positive view of the FBK, while 54% had a negative view. The survey also found that 16% of Russians were “foreign” to the FBK knew about the “Agent” designation.

  • Theft of election funds (2012): This investigation by Navalny exposed alleged corruption within the United Russia party, demonstrating his use of public funds for his own benefit.
  • The Seagull (2015): This investigation by Navalny focused on a luxury yacht and other assets allegedly owned by Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov, shedding light on the use of offshore schemes by government officials.
  • The Secret Wealth of Dmitry Medvedev (2017): This investigation by Navalny revealed a vast network of luxury properties allegedly owned by former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, exacerbating the disparity of wealth between Russia’s elite and its citizens. 
  • A Palace for Putin (2021): This video, commissioned by Navalny, details a massive, lavish Black Sea palace built for President Vladimir Putin with allegedly embezzled funds. Reason for Alexei Navalny going to jail

Navalny has always been a fierce critic of President Putin and the Russian government. He was accused of financial crimes by Russian authorities, leading to multiple convictions and prison terms. His FBK organisation was allegedly banned.

He was poisoned with Novichok nerve agent in Siberia in August 2020, for which he was taken to Berlin for treatment and after about a month of treatment, he survived and was discharged. He was arrested again for violating parole conditions upon his return to Russia in January 2021.

Navalny was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison in 2021 for violating the terms of his parole in a 2014 fraud case.

In March 2022, he was sentenced to an additional nine years in prison on charges of embezzlement and contempt of court. However, he said that the charges were politically motivated and that he was being punished for opposing the Russian government.

In August 2023, he received an additional prison sentence of 19 years for alleged extremist activity.

Alexei Navalny Cause of death

Alexei Navalny died in prison on 16 February 2024 while serving his sentence. His death has not been explained yet. He was 47 years old and had every chance to shine in politics.

He investigated and exposed corruption, primarily in collaboration with his organisation, targeting several high-ranking officials and President Putin.

Navalny always advocated democratic reforms in Russia, including free and fair elections, independent media, and the rule of law.
