Bob Uecker was a legendary baseball player who passed away on January 16, 2025, at the age of 90. He had been battling small cell lung cancer since early 2023.
Uecker was the voice of the Milwaukee Brewers for more than five decades, starting in 1971. He played six MLB seasons and remains a beloved figure in baseball history, despite being an "average" player. His career batting average was just .200.
In 2003, he was honored with the Ford C. Frick Award by the National Baseball Hall of Fame for his extraordinary broadcasting career.
Uecker played the iconic role of broadcaster Harry Doyle on the popular 1980s TV show "Mr. Belvedere" and the hit movie "Major League," coining phrases like "just a bit outside."
He made nearly 100 guest appearances on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson," becoming a comedy favorite with his self-deprecating humor.
In the '70s and '80s, he became famous for his Miller Lite "All Stars" commercials, where he would famously declare, "I should be in the front row!" — only to end up in the cheap seats.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a special section called "Uecker Seats" — considered the worst seats in baseball, named after his famous comedic personality.
Beyond baseball, he hosted syndicated TV shows such as “Bob Uecker’s Wacky World of Sports” and “Bob Uecker’s War of the Stars.”
In 1984, he hosted “Saturday Night Live,” although the episode was not considered a great performance.
Uecker made memorable appearances at WrestleMania III and IV, showcasing his sense of humor on a global stage.
Uecker is an avid fisherman who regularly participates in the Make-A-Wish Foundation charity fishing tournament.
Uecker wrote the book “Catcher in the Wry,” a humorous autobiography filled with his baseball stories and jokes.
